There are 3 types of smoke detectors, An Ionization smoke alarm a Photoelectric smoke alarms and a Combination of the two. The Ionization is the most forgiving as it looks of specific fire smoke and can be dialed to not notice certain levels of smoke or haze from machines.

The photoelectric also has a variable light beam. If the beam is interrupted by a certain amount of smoke, then the alarm will activate. Its advised to discuss options with a Fire Marshall.
